Emotions and Feelings are like Waves

When I was a child, I feared the waves. I would be afraid to go in the ocean simply because I thought the waves would take me with them. I battled my fears for years until one day, I decided to feel the fear and get in the ocean, anyway!!! That made all the difference.

But the moment I was in, I was swept by a huge strong gushing wave of salty water that left me gasping for breath. However, as the wave retreated, I felt the fear fade away and a refreshing sense of relief. Not only had I overcome my fear but I also felt exhilarated. After a few such attempts, I realized that I could be friends with the waves, if only I understood their nature better. I could ride them instead of resisting and crashing against them, each time. So, I started jumping high with each wave and to my surprise, the wave would gently carry me with it. Oh what a fun day, that was!

I later learned to relate this to life. I realized how similar our emotions and circumstances are to these waves in the ocean of life. They come out of no-where sometimes, you can’t always predict how strong a wave it would be, they come and they go. That’s it!! You can’t stop them from coming. But, does this mean you stop living, simply because you are afraid of your emotions and circumstances!!! Hell, no!! What fun would that be???

If you love the ocean, you have to make your peace with them waves. If you love life, you have to accept your feelings and circumstances. Don’t resist them, don’t shy away from them, don’t reject them, don’t criticize them. Just ACCEPT and understand them. Make them your ally and ride with the tidal waves.
